Call for Entries: Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest

The International Press Photo Contest named after Andrei Stenin, a Rossiya Segodnya photojournalist who died in the line of duty in southeastern Ukraine, began accepting submissions for its fifth year — the start date always falls on Stenin’s birthday, December 22. Entries from young photographers aged 18 to 33 will be accepted on the contest’s website, stenincontest.com, until February 28, 2019.

The Stenin Contest is the only competition in Russia that discovers new names in international photojournalism and develops standards of quality for documentary photography. The contest is aimed at supporting young photojournalists and helping them on the world photojournalism stage.

In 2019, five years since the contest was established, the contenders will compete in five categories: the usual four —Top News, Sport, My Planet, and Portrait. A Hero of Our Time — plus a new one, Inspiration. Entries in this new category must be single photographs depicting either the cause or expression of inspiration, such as nature, ethnic or genre photos, and portraits of children and adults shot using various techniques and styles. The contenders can submit one single image and one series entry in every category.

The prize money for this year’s first, second and third place winners will be 100,000, 75,000 and 50,000 rubles (approximately $1,500, $1,120 and $750), respectively. The Grand Prix winner will receive 700,000 rubles (approximately $10,470). Another perk of winning is having your work showcased both in Russia and around the world in a travelling exhibition that has become a fixture of the contest and already reached dozens of major cities in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

“The Andrei Stenin Contest is expanding its presence on the global stage of photojournalism. Our finalists say that young photographers who want to improve their skills see the contest as a must. There are few countries from which we have not received any interesting entries yet. We invite young photojournalists from around the world to take part in the 2019 contest and wish them all the best,” contest curator Oksana Oleinik, head of the Visual Projects Service of the Rossiya Segodnya United Photo Information Directorate, said.

In 2018, the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contestwas supported by major Russian and international media outlets, news agencies and the photography community. Partners in several categories included the Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG), the Al Mayadeen TV pan-Arabic news network and the International Committee of the Red Cross, one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations. 

About the contest:

The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest was launched by Rossiya Segodnya under the aegis of the Russian Commission for UNESCO. Its main goal is to support young photographers and draw public attention to the challenges of modern photojournalism. This contest is a platform for young photographers; talented, empathetic and open-minded, they draw our attention to people and events around us.
In 2018, the contest jury included representatives from the world’s leading news agencies: AFP (France), Anadolu Ajansi (Turkey), Notimex (Mexico), as well as world-class photographers and editors. The jury was chaired by Ahmet Sel, who is Visual News Editor in Chief for Anadolu Agency (Turkey).

DPC’s next Photo bus trip is all set for Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary / Keoladeo National Park ) a paradise for the avian world and a pilgrimage for the bird lovers. This is going to be a 2 day/ 1 night stay in Bharatpur photo capture trip to take some breathtaking photos, learn photography from peers, and be your creative self 24×7 leaving office and work behind!The Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that sees (or saw) thousands of rare and highly endangered birds such as the Siberian Crane come here during the winter season. Over 230 species of birds are known to have made the National Park their home. It is also a major tourist centre with scores of ornithologists arriving here in the hibernate season. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971. It is also a declared World Heritage Site.

Travel Details: Leave Delhi for Bharatpur
Meeting Place: IIT Delhi, main gate
Timings: 5.00 am (pls be there 15mins prior to departure)
Breakfast on the way to Bharatpur
Reach Bharatpur checking in at Guest House and after Lunch rushing to National Park and clicking till the sunset.
Dinner and Camp fire at Guest House

16th December (Sunday):
Early morning getting ready for the Photographing through the day at National Park
Coming out of the park for lunch
Start back at 6.00 after the sunset .
Dinner on the way

Other Important Details:
Stay: will be on twin sharing basis in a home stay environment at guest house
Gear: You may carry tripods , Zoom Lenses and wide-angle lenses. Carry woollens and comfortable shoes, shades and sunscreen. A digital camera, batteries and memory card all set! And needless to say enthusiasm in abundance!
Mode of Travel: We will be travelling by 16 seater tempo Traveller.
Meal: Simple vegetarian meals will be provided by the club.
The group will follow the itinerary mentioned above, however if one wants to visit places at one owns will, can visit accordingly on their own.
Fee (per person): Rs 6000/- and Rs.5000/- for members (including registration fee).
Fee includes travel & group transfers, stay & meals, ticket to park.

DPC announces brand new Heritage photowalk to the Ghats of Yamuna.

A unique place to click people , portrait and amazing landscapes with migrant birds.

Big rivers have throughout history been important to the development of capitals. This Photowalk is dedicated to the Yamuna river that has been an important yet silent witness to Delhi’s history. The tour starts from the Yamuna at Nigambodh Ghat which unfolds the ritualistic devotion of how the Hindus treat the historic river.

The Yamuna is a goddess to the eyes of her devotees despite its current struggles with pollution. Topping it off with an unforgettable view of the Jama Masjid back through the streets of Old Delhi, discovering the Yamuna route is truly a unique and memorable experience.

The beginning of legend: Nigambodh ghat seen from across the river. These are the sacred waters within which Brahma recovered the book of knowledge and the powers of divinity, which he had lost. Nigambodh Ghat is thus a place of ending, it marks the finality of the mortal core; but it is also the source of a regeneration of immortal wisdom, of sacred knowledge. Death and immortality exist together.

The great epics and sacred texts tell us about the beauty and power of the river Yamuna. This is the daughter of the sun god; sister of Yama, the god of death; lover of Krishna; sister to that other great river goddess, Ganga.The Gods themselves, Brahma and Shiva, are said to worship her.

The Ras Lila paintings of Lord Krishna consorting with his gopis are magical, ethereal, depictions of the river surrounded by lush sacred groves. On her banks, the great Sufi saint Nizamuddin Aulia spread his divine message. This is a river revered through antiquity; a river by which a unique culture flourished.

Today, however, as the Yamuna winds her course through the 22 kilometer stretch of Delhi, she bears no resemblance to her legend. Decades of wanton disregard have turned her into nothing more than a stinking sewer that is biologically ‘dead’ as it flows out of Delhi.

Yet there is a little stretch, a place where the story of Indraprastha begins; the story of the Pandavas, the story of Delhi. Here, despite the filth and degradation. From Nigambodh Ghat to the Lal Pul or the Old Iron Bridge, you discover ways of life that are still intertwined with the river and its sacred avatar.

About Akhsat Bhargava 

Photography can be an art of living for an ardent photographer like Akshat Bhargava. He is an avid traveler and his incessant passion to explore the vividness of various places and their cultural hues always inspired him to be a photographer at a young age. He strongly believes that everyone has an indigenous quality to capture a captivating image, but only a few have an eye to envisage the hidden emotion that conveys a story of a particular image.

 

So far he has traveled around 20 countries and willing to explore more. After earning a Diploma in Masterscraftman of Professional Photography and Digital Imaging from Shari Academy, Mumbai, he picked up a job in America and start doing what he always wanted to do, Travel and Photography.

Besides holding a diploma in Photography and Digital Imaging, he has done another multi-faceted course in filmmaking from Sydney, Australia.

He has worked extensively with renowned brands like – McKinsey and Company, Amazon, Shopclues, Clarks, One Championship, etc. The journey he embarked years ago to become what he is today has been full of challenges yet interesting. He is now established as a stalwart and a visionary photographer amongst his clients. He does not only believe in meeting the client’s expectations, rather exceeding them.
